Songs About Galveston There is also a wealth of non-fiction written about Galveston that is both fascinating and riveting, so it isn't surprising that three dozen novels have used this city as their location! In fact, there are even two series of detective novels, set in the City! One stars Galveston Private Detective Truman Smith; the other features former Galveston Homicide Detective Cade McCane! All of these books can be found on our Reading List page. An initial search for music, inspired by The Magical Island Kingdom, resulted in a list that is rather paltry in comparison to the other forms of expression! The Internet lists only a handful of songs about Galveston. However, what this search did not discover, are the newer songs, being composed by local songwriters. This page hopes to add many more titles to the original list! Songs are listed, in alphabetical order, by the songwriter's last name. Billy Bourbon "QUICK AS I COULD" I’ve always needed the ocean, I’ve always heard it in my head I’ve always dreamed of the LoneStar, While layin’ in my bed You ain’t always born where you need to be You don’t always wind up where you should I’ve always loved Texas I got here as quick as I could I’ve been a carpenter and a radioman, I’ve played this guitar and I’ve drove truck But it wasn’t until I crossed the Texas line That I ever had any luck You ain’t always born where you need to be You don’t always wind up where you should I’ve always loved Texas I got here as quick as I could Now I’m down here in Galveston, Soaking up the sun People down here They know how to have fun You ain’t always born where you need to be You don’t always wind up where you should I’ve always loved Texas I got here as quick as I could I’ve always loved Texas I got here as quick as I could Listen Buy It Jimmy Buffett "WHO'S THE BLONDE STRANGER?" Nothing like this way out in west Texas Galveston Bay is a whole other world My wife's in her room getting over her sunburn How would Louis Lamore get me next to that girl? She tells me her tan is the same way all over She asks me to dance and says, "Keep your boots on" She never met a number one cowboy We rolled in the sand and drank rum until dawn Who's the blonde stranger" Who entered my life" Making me over in the moonlight This side of Texas is all new to me Who's the blonde stranger who lives by the sea? I stayed up all night and for me that's the first time Sneak in the room just as cool as I can Pull back the sheets and the bed is all empty Except for a note left by some guy named Dan My head got all light and the room started spinning I stepped outside just to get some fresh air Out on a wave was my own darling Lola And some pretty boy with bleach in his hair Who's the blonde stranger out there with my wife? What were they doing in the moonlight? This side of Texas is all new to me Who are these strangers who live by the sea? Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, & Frank Beard "BALINESE" Deep in the South of Texas not so long ago, there on a crowded island in the Gulf of Mexico it didn't take too much money, man, but it sure was nice. You could dance all night if you felt all right, drinking whiskey and throwing dice. And everybody knows it was hard to leave. And everybody knows it was down at the Balinese. Yeah, I remember Ruby, she always dressed in red wearing skintight pants, Lord, and how she could dance with a rag wrapped around her head. And everybody knows it was hard to leave. Are you alone? Roger McGuinn "MIGHTY DAY" Em B7 I remember one September, Em B7 When storm winds swept the town; Em Am The high tide from the ocean, Lord, B7 Em Put water all around. Em Em7 cho: Wasn't that a mighty day, A Am A mighty day Em A mighty day, B7 Great God, that morning Em When the storm winds swept the town! There was a sea-wall there in Galveston To keep the waters down, But the high tide from the ocean, Lord, Put water in the town. The trumpets warned the people, 'You'd better leave this place!' But they never meant to leave their homes Till death was in their face. The trains they all were loaded With people leaving town; The tracks gave way to the ocean, Lord, And the trains they went on down. The seas began to rolling, The ships they could not land; I heard a Captain crying, 'God, please save a drowning man!' The waters, like some river, Came a-rushing to and fro; I saw my father drowning, God, And I watched my mother go! Now death, your hands are icy; You've got them on my knee. You took away my mother, Now you're coming after me! Listen J.D. Richards "THE GULF OF MEXICO" This island’s a life line tied to my soul It tides me through on the days I lose control When the devil gets the upper hand And the rum takes it’s toll There’s a place close to heaven that I go Chorus: I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico Let the warm water take away my sins The beach is my church I know - So when my heart gets so cold I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico. I used to live in the city - Half my life on the road I got tired running in circles – Not sure which way to go I escaped just in time – I was about to explode Now I live on island time and go with the flow. Chorus: I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico Let the warm water take away my sins The beach is my church I know - So when my heart gets so cold I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico. "SUMMER WIND" I come here late at night To listen to the wind As it dances through The palm leaves over my head Tonight the sky is clear And the moon is bright As I lay down with the sand for my bed. "I LIVE IN A BLUE HOUSE" I sing for my supper and love every moment As long as I'm anywhere out of Beaumont I've adopted this island - When I'm here I'm home I moved down here to be close to my daughter She's an angel on earth - I'm lucky I've got her If it wasn't for her I'd probably be dead Chorus: I live in a blue house eight blocks from the ocean I love it here. I live in slow motion. No reason to worry - No reason to worry at all I live in a blue house on Galveston Island Everywhere I turn the people are smiling I'm in no hurry - I'm in no hurry at all Been married more times than I care to remember In the beginning it's always "Love-ah-me-tender" Somebody slap me if I ever get that notion again I've got lots of friends - Too many to mention There's pretty ladies in every direction I'm still looking for the one whose looking for me Chorus: I live in a blue house eight blocks from the ocean I love it here. I live in slow motion. No reason to worry - No reason to worry at all I live in a blue house on Galveston Island Everywhere I turn the people are smiling I'm in no hurry - I'm in no hurry at all Tonight I'm playing at the Captain’s Table Lord this isn't work - I'm lucky I'm able There was a time I thought I'd never do this again My memory's gone - That's a blessing and a curse But I wish I could remember the 2nd verse It's getting better the longer that I'm down here. "WAVE DANCE" I watch the waves chew up the beach Now my cabin's within their reach Another year or so - one more tropical blow And they'll swallow my home. Chorus: The beach is a church for my soul A playground for hearts that never grow old For me, it's a lifelong romance I go down to the water And I watch the waves dance Some people just don't understand The kinship we have with the water and the wind Long after we're gone the waves will roll on And on and on. Chorus: The beach is a church for my soul A playground for hearts that never grow old For me, it's a lifelong romance I go down to the water And watch the waves dance Bridge: An army of white caps Waiting in line To throw themselves On the beach to die. "FREE BORN ISLAND MAN – PART 2" The Heroes’ Monument rests In the center of Broadway I used to live a block away In a blue house with a view of the street Where the crack heads came out to play I moved down here in search of my soul And I found so much more Surfin’ for money with an old guitar On the waves of the Mardi Gras shore. Chorus: They say no man is an island and I know that for a fact I came here a broken man and I’ve made it half way back I’ve got all weather friends and the palm trees and the sand It’s hard work stayin’ tan - I’m a free born island man. “The Free State of Galveston” was a damn good bet Till the Texas Rangers hatched a plan. Attorney General Wilson sent the gamblers packin. They went to Vegas to deal their hand. In 1957 the politicians saved our souls When they smashed the slot machines They showed us who was in control Of our hopes and our oleander dreams. Chorus: They say no man is an island and I know that for a fact I came here a broken man and I’ve made it half way back I’ve got all weather friends and the palm trees and the sand It’s hard work stayin’ tan - I’m a free born island man. Chorus: They say no man is an island and I know that for a fact I came here a broken man and I’ve made it half way back I’ve got all weather friends and the palm trees and the sand It’s hard work stayin’ tan - I’m a free born island man. There’s a gumbo of music in the air The rhythm of the waves dial me in. My friends have my back when the devil sits at my table And tries to drown me in gin. Chorus: (Now) I wake up at the door to Heaven The island gives peace to my soul I know where I belong Galveston’s more than a Glenn Campbell song At night when I lay down for sleepin’ And the thoughts of the day crowd my head The sound of the beach is my lullaby And I float away in my bed. Chorus: (Now) I wake up at the door to Heaven The island gives peace to my soul I know where I belong Galveston’s more than a Glenn Campbell song Bridge: Sarah came down for the weekend Leavin’ Dallas far behind She had to leave and go back I didn’t know how to act but I’m sure I’ll be just fine Chorus: (Now) I wake up at the door to Heaven The island gives peace to my soul I know where I belong Galveston’s more than a Glenn Campbell song Galveston’s more than a Glenn Campbell song From the album "Pelican Island" © 2006 Beach-a-Saurus Music BMI Listen Buy It! "LIFE'S A BEACH" We used to drive up on Cherry Hill And park till the cops would come We’d crack the windows so we could hear the waves And I’d do my best to get me some That was back when we thought we’d live forever. We were ten foot tall and bullet proof You’d go home drunk and you’d catch hell. Your Daddy’d say “Not under my roof”. Chorus #1 We here for the birth of rock-n-roll And when man walked on the moon We’ve watched’em put a spin on anything To make the truth into a cartoon. For now I’ll just enjoy myself No time wasted wonderin’ why Life’s a beach and then you die There’s a road of moonlight on the water The waves dance as the mermaids sing. I feel the breeze upon my face As I listen for angel wings I’ve grown older without trying. The days come and they disappear. I’m a child of the baby boom Thankful for every year. Chorus #2 Now they’re cloning everything. Humans behind closed doors. Playing God with DNA. There’s nothing left that’s really yours. We’re losing the human race While time drifts slowly by Life’s a beach and then you die Bridge: There’s nothing over the rainbow And once you realize it’s true You’ll find home is where the heart is And it’s all up to you. Chorus #3 After all these years of livin’ I’m a little closer to the truth I know there’s so much more to learn. Lord, I regret the sins of my youth. You don’t a second chance so you’d better live it right. 'Cause life’s a beach and then you die. Life’s a beach and then you die. I wonder why no one gets out alive From a world full of shuck and jive. The poor get the shaft and the fat get fatter. I've got a buddy from Jamaica Beach. ‘Rides a Harley from Hell and seven days a week His girlfriend looks like a Penthouse Pet I borrowed his Harley one Saturday night Gave a blonde a ride in the island moonlight She was a pleasure to see And joy to hold Riding down the road out of control I've got love tattooed on my soul Chorus: Don't believe the bullshit you hear on TV It's all propaganda from the CIA Big business owns the government Ain't no doubt where the money went Conservative or liberal it don't matter The poor get the shaft and the fat get fatter. Bridge: Health care for us all would be God sent But we beat around the Bush as the main event Prayin' we don't have to live out of our car Waitin' for another FDR Life is a game with too many rules. When you're born rich you can buy the tools To build your house on the right side of the tracks The poor keep waiting for lady luck As they work to keep rolling in their pickup truck It don’t seem fair for blood to decide your fate Wars are fought for power and food Peace is a noble attitude.
