Songs About Galveston

Galveston has always inspired a wide variety of creative expression! Sometimes its essence is captured in paintings or photography.

There is also a wealth of
non-fiction written about Galveston that is both fascinating and riveting, so it isn't surprising that three dozen novels have used this city as their location!

In fact, there are even two series of detective novels, set in the City! One stars Galveston Private Detective Truman Smith; the other features
former Galveston Homicide Detective Cade McCane! All of these books can be found on our Reading List page.

An initial search for music, inspired by The Magical Island Kingdom, resulted in a list that is rather paltry in comparison to the other forms of expression! The Internet lists only a handful of songs about Galveston. However, what this search did not discover, are the newer songs, being composed by local songwriters. This page hopes to add many more titles to the original list!

Songs are listed, in alphabetical order, by the songwriter's last name.

"QUICK AS I COULD"

I’ve always needed the ocean,
I’ve always heard it in my head
I’ve always dreamed of the LoneStar,
While layin’ in my bed

You ain’t always born where you need to be
You don’t always wind up where you should
I’ve always loved Texas
I got here as quick as I could

I’ve been a carpenter and a radioman,
I’ve played this guitar and I’ve drove truck
But it wasn’t until I crossed the Texas line
That I ever had any luck

You ain’t always born where you need to be
You don’t always wind up where you should
I’ve always loved Texas
I got here as quick as I could

Now I’m down here in Galveston,
Soaking up the sun
People down here
They know how to have fun

You ain’t always born where you need to be
You don’t always wind up where you should
I’ve always loved Texas
I got here as quick as I could

I’ve always loved Texas
I got here as quick as I could

"WHO'S THE BLONDE STRANGER?"

Nothing like this way out in west Texas
Galveston Bay is a whole other world
My wife's in her room getting over her sunburn
How would Louis Lamore get me next to that girl?

She tells me her tan is the same way all over
She asks me to dance and says, "Keep your boots on"
She never met a number one cowboy
We rolled in the sand and drank rum until dawn

Who's the blonde stranger"
Who entered my life"
Making me over in the moonlight
This side of Texas is all new to me
Who's the blonde stranger who lives by the sea?

I stayed up all night and for me that's the first time
Sneak in the room just as cool as I can
Pull back the sheets and the bed is all empty
Except for a note left by some guy named Dan

My head got all light and the room started spinning
I stepped outside just to get some fresh air
Out on a wave was my own darling Lola
And some pretty boy with bleach in his hair

Who's the blonde stranger out there with my wife?
What were they doing in the moonlight?
This side of Texas is all new to me
Who are these strangers who live by the sea?

Back on the ranch and every thing's normal
Beach blanket bingo comes on the TV
We talk in our sleep and then the next morning
I ask her who's Dan and she asks who's Marie?

"BALINESE"

Deep in the South of Texas
not so long ago,
there on a crowded island
in the Gulf of Mexico

it didn't take too much money,
man, but it sure was nice.
You could dance all night if you felt all right,
drinking whiskey and throwing dice.

And everybody knows
it was hard to leave.
And everybody knows
it was down at the Balinese.

Yeah, I remember Ruby,
she always dressed in red
wearing skintight pants, Lord, and how she could dance
with a rag wrapped around her head.

And everybody knows
it was hard to leave.
And everybody knows
it was down at the Balinese.

And everybody knows
it was hard to leave.
And everybody knows
it was down at the Balinese,
it was down at the Balinese,
it was down at the Balinese.

"RUMORS & GOSSIP (IN A SMALL TOWN)"

Key of C

People are talkin’, all around, Rumors and gossip in a small town  C, G, Fm, C, G, Fm, C
Fell in love with a dark-haired woman, I lost and found  C, G, Fm
They stood her up, then they shot her down
C, G, Fm, C

I’ve heard it a hundred times, that don’t make it true, I know you’re sorry, I’m sorry too

Say they want to protect me, and give me advice
While they’re kissing my ass, they’re twisting the knife
They’re implying she’s lyin’, that she’s sleepin’ around
Rumors and Gossip in a small town

Look at your friends, you never know, Am, F, G, C,
One day they’re hot, next day they’re cold
Am, F, G, C
They say that she’ll hurt me, that she’ll let me down  Fm, C, E, Am
Rumors and gossip in a small town C, G, Fm, C

Why do you do this?  Is it a game?  Nobody wins, it’s a sin Bflat, F, G, C, Am, F
When you ruin somebody’s name G, C

Voices to the left of me, whispers on my right, Bflat, F, G, C
Loose tongues lying, gossip flying Am, F,
Wicked words under cover of night  G, C – Fm, G, G7

Everybody’s your friend, but behind your back, You give ‘em your trust,, then they attack
They’re lyin’ to me, they’re lyin’ to you
There’s my side, her side, their side and then there’s the truth

I’ve heard it a hundred times, that don’t make it true, I know you’re sorry, I’m sorry too

They’re trying to break us, every day, It’s not what they say, it’s the way
You can’t turn me against her, so leave us alone
Turn around, walk away, I’m closing the door

Look at your friends, you never know, One day they’re hot, next day they’re cold
They say that she’ll hurt me, that she’s runnin’ round
Rumors and gossip in a small town

The rumors succeeded, the gossip drove her down  C, G, Fm, C
She packed up her bags and she left town  C, G, F, C
My baby loved me, but it’s over now  Fm, C, E, Am
There’s one more broken heart, in the small town…. C, G, Fm, C
Rumors and Gossip in a small town… Am, Em, Am, F, G, C

"THE BOTTLE OR THE GUN"

The ocean never rests, baby, The tide keeps rollin’ in
The waves lick at the sandy beach, then roll back out again
The seabirds glide above my head, riding on the wind
Just drift in no direction, destination with no end

I have to keep on livin’, though my girl is out of reach
And every day I lose some ground, like sand washed off the beach

My heart beats with no purpose,  it’s over, you have won
Looks like it’s a choice between the bottle or the gun

I hear music, I hear laughter, in the house just down the road
Is that your shadow through the window?  Are you alone?
I go out walking in the darkness,  I feel like getting’ stoned
The night’s the time to think, girl, got to do it on my own

I have to keep on livin’, though my girl is out of reach
And every day I lose some ground, like sand washed off the beach

My heart beats with no purpose,  it’s over, you have won
Looks like it’s a choice between the bottle or the gun

Baby won’t you call me, won’t you let me know?
The waiting is what’s killing me, how can you be so cold?
I walk around, I drive around, I stare out at the sea
I might walk into the ocean till the waves roll over me

The sun will rise next morning,  the tide will come back in
I tell myself to breathe until I think I can live again
Right now I gotta kill the pain, so I’ll just drink till then
I’ll drink you out of my mind, you’re the mother of all sin

I have to keep on livin’, though my girl is out of reach
And every day I lose some ground, like sand washed off the beach

My heart beats with no purpose,  it’s over, you have won
Looks like it’s a choice between the bottle or the gun

I need someone but it sure ain’t you, you won’t stay home and you can’t be true
Seems like I’m the only one who didn’t know that girls just wanna have fun
So I’ll pour myself another stiff one and think about, The bottle or the gun,
What’s it gonna be, the bottle or the gun?  What’s it gonna be,  the bottle or the gun?

"OVER THE BRIDGE (ACROSS THE SEA)"

Over the bridge, across the sea, Paradise is waiting for me
I got a dark-haired woman, she’s fine as can be
Over the bridge, across the sea

She lives on an Island, in a mansion by the sea
Every day I hurry home to her
I can’t wait to be…

Over the bridge, across the sea, Paradise is waiting for me
I got a dark-haired woman, she’s fine as can be
Over the bridge, across the sea

I was lost on the Island, washed up like a fish on the sand
And one fine day she found me, And took me by the hand… and led me

Over the bridge, across the sea, Paradise is waiting for me
I got a woman, she’s fine as can be
Over the bridge, across the sea

She showed me the sky, she looked deep into my eyes
I had forgotten how to feel
Now it’s a love that’s true and real

Over the bridge, across the sea, Paradise is waiting for me
I got a woman, she’s fine as can be
Over the bridge, across the sea

Now I live on that Island, in a mansion by the sea
She showed me her garden
And I read her “Annabell Lee”

Yes, every day I hurry home to her
Because I can’t wait to be

Over the bridge, across the sea, Paradise is waiting for me
I got a woman, she’s fine as can be
Over the bridge, across the sea

"MIGHTY DAY"

Em B7
I remember one September,
Em B7
When storm winds swept the town;
Em Am
The high tide from the ocean, Lord,
B7 Em
Put water all around.
Em Em7
cho: Wasn't that a mighty day,
A Am
A mighty day
Em
A mighty day,
B7
Great God, that morning
Em
When the storm winds swept the town!

There was a sea-wall there in Galveston
To keep the waters down,
But the high tide from the ocean, Lord,
Put water in the town.

The trumpets warned the people,
'You'd better leave this place!'
But they never meant to leave their homes
Till death was in their face.

The trains they all were loaded
With people leaving town;
The tracks gave way to the ocean, Lord,
And the trains they went on down.

The seas began to rolling,
The ships they could not land;
I heard a Captain crying,
'God, please save a drowning man!'

The waters, like some river,
Came a-rushing to and fro;
I saw my father drowning, God,
And I watched my mother go!

Now death, your hands are icy;
You've got them on my knee.
You took away my mother,
Now you're coming after me!

"THE GULF OF MEXICO"

This island’s a life line tied to my soul
It tides me through on the days I lose control
When the devil gets the upper hand
And the rum takes it’s toll
There’s a place close to heaven that I go

Chorus:
I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico
Let the warm water take away my sins
The beach is my church I know - So when my heart gets so cold
I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico.

I used to live in the city - Half my life on the road
I got tired running in circles – Not sure which way to go
I escaped just in time – I was about to explode
Now I live on island time and go with the flow.

Chorus:
I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico
Let the warm water take away my sins
The beach is my church I know - So when my heart gets so cold
I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico.

Music Break:

Chorus:
I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico
Let the warm water take away my sins
The beach is my church I know - So when my heart
gets so cold
I wash my troubles away - In the Gulf of Mexico.

"BABY COME HOME"

The raindrops fall like tears of pain
They slither down the window pane
I sit and watch that damn TV
Suck the life out of my brain
On the seawall the sirens scream
For the broken bodies and shattered dreams

Friday night and I’m alone
Standing guard by a silent phone
This is not the life that I rehearsed
I just wish I’d found you first
If I’d never loved I wouldn’t hurt
But it takes the pain to show what love’s worth

Chorus:
I need you tonight – Baby come home
I miss you – Baby come home

You and I were meant to be
What was destiny turned tragedy
Every day we’ve been apart
Leaves a scar inside my heart
I wish I could find the words to take away the hurt

Chorus:
I need you tonight – Baby come home
I miss you – Baby come home

Bridge:
Your eyes talk to me – In my heart I know
I’m still in love with you – There’s no letting go – No letting go

I still hold you as I sleep
The shadow of what used to be
I used to drink to fill the hole
Your absence left in my soul
You turned and walked away – It seems like it was yesterday

Chorus:
I need you tonight – Baby come home
I miss you – Baby come home

Chorus:
I need you tonight – Baby come home
I miss you – Baby come home

"SUMMER WIND"

I come here late at night
To listen to the wind
As it dances through
The palm leaves over my head
Tonight the sky is clear
And the moon is bright
As I lay down with the sand for my bed.

Chorus:
Thinkin’ ‘bout all things I wish were different
Wishin’ I knew where I’ll go when I’m dead
When I’m alone I see things more clearly
So here I am again listenin’ to the summer wind.

The ladies in my life treat me kind
They feed my soul
And a few have graced my bed.
I get confused some time
I leave when I should have stayed
And I’ve lived to regret the times I wed.

Chorus:
Thinkin’ ‘bout all things I wish were different
Wishin’ I knew where I’ll go when I’m dead
When I’m alone I see things more clearly
So here I am again listenin’ to the summer wind.

Bridge:
Life shouldn’t be so complicated
It’s simple once you understand
That love don’t always last forever
And all of us can’t live the family plan.

Intro Turnaround:

Here I am tonight
Reaching to the sky
As the stars dance like diamonds
O’er my head
Each star’s a friend I’ve lost
Catholic, Baptist, or Pentecost
I couldn’t pray’em back from being dead

Chorus:
Thinkin’ ‘bout all things I wish were different
Wishin’ I knew where I’ll go when I’m dead
When I’m alone I see things more clearly
So here I am again listenin’ to the summer wind.

"MARINE SULPHUR QUEEN"

February 2nd 1963 the crew said their good-byes
To wives, friends, and children
who were wiping the sleep from their eyes
8 am they departed - Every thing seemed routine
On the Marine Sulphur Queen

It was a day like any other -
From Beaumont she sailed
Liquid sulphur filled her belly -
She groaned as the main tank swelled
Captain Fanning watched the weather
as the seas are turning mean
For the Marine Sulphur Queen

She'd made this trip many times before
through the Gulf of Mexico
There were high seas as she neared "The Keys" -
No call for help from her radio
In Norfolk they said she was missing -
Never again to be seen
The Marine Sulphur Queen

The air search commenced on the 8th
with the ship long over-due
It was two weeks before they found a life jacket
but no sign of the captain and crew
39 sailors vanished in time -
The pride of the merchant marine
With the Marine Sulphur Queen

At Laguna Madre (the) end of April
they found a bottle with a note
A crude map of the Florida Straits
with "ship" marked at the approach
It said there was an explosion -
Is this how the fates intervened?
The Marine Sulphur Queen

Debris washed up on the beach
but the ship was never found
Some blame "The Devil's Triangle"
but old age brought the lady down
One day they'll find the wreckage
where she's been waiting since '63
The Marine Sulphur Queen
The secrets she took with her remain
just short of "The Keys"

"DOWN ON THE STRAND"

Here I am in the street with blood on my hands
Standing over the body of a dead man
I dropped the knife but my feet refused to run
I could feel the weight on my heart of what I’d done
Down on the Strand

I knew my woman she was cheatin’ on me
So I followed her off into the night
Found her in the shadows in the arms of another man
I snuck up behind them then took matters in my hands
Down on the Strand

Chorus:
I killed in a fit of rage with no respect for life
My blade was swift and cut a hole in the Texas night
It didn’t turn out the way I planned
Down on the Strand
Down on the Strand

The cops came and they took me away
They wanted a statement in my own hand
When I refused to talk they locked me up
Said I killed in a premeditated plan
Down on the Strand

Chorus:
I killed in a fit of rage with no respect for life
My blade was swift and cut a hole in the Texas night
I never dreamed it was my best friend
Down on the Strand
Down on the Strand

The devil ruled my soul on that tragic night
Justice is swift so today they’ll end my life
Killing them both is my ticket to Hell
It happened so fast – I murdered so well
Down on the Strand

Chorus:
My best friend was with a woman who looked like mine
My jealous heart was in control – Love is blind
I thought I’d found her with another man
Down on the Strand
I murdered my best friend
Down on the Strand
I’ll never hold my woman again
Down on the Strand

"TODAY"

The Gulf of Mexico is quiet tonight
There’s stars on the water and a highway of moonlight
Somewhere my destiny waits for me.

Out here life’s not complicated
The rockin’ of the boat keeps me sedated
Now I understand Hemingway’s “Old Man and the Sea”.

Chorus:
Life hangs by a slender thread
Living to the morning that you wake up dead
Don’t wait till tomorrow
‘Cause tomorrow can be taken away
Start living today – Start living today

When I’m on the water I see visions of truth
With no one to impress and nothing to prove
I pray the wind will take me to my port of call

I wore my heart on my sleeve for most of my life
I could do no wrong as long as I was right
Whose right shouldn’t matter that much at all

Chorus:
Life hangs by a slender thread
Living to the morning that you wake up dead
Don’t wait till tomorrow
‘Cause tomorrow can be taken away
Start living today – Start living today

Bridge:
At the end of my voyage sit me adrift on a bed of flames
Let my ashes rise up and the wind take me away

Chorus:
Life hangs by a slender thread
Living to the morning that you wake up dead
Don’t wait till tomorrow
‘Cause tomorrow can be taken away
Start living today – Start living today

"IT’S NOT LOVE"

Blue lights of neon flashing by my window
As me and my new lady lie bathing in the light
“Personal Jesus” rocks into the darkness
From the bar across the street where we just met tonight

She says her name is Sasha and she’s from north of Denver
A natural blonde with a tattoo on her thigh
A petite  bar room angel who asks too many questions
But she moves like a temptress to my obvious delight

Chorus:
No, It’s not love that we’re making
No, it’s not love here tonight
It’s not love but I’m not complaining
It’s not forever but that’s all right

Will I sing and play guitar at a bar on the beach
I see people come and fade into the night
Some nights I go home alone and stay up till sunrise
Other nights I get lucky like I did tonight

Chorus:
No, It’s not love that we’re making
No, it’s not love here tonight
It’s not love but I’m not complaining
It’s not forever but that’s all right

Bridge:
I know there’s more to life than hit and run romances
But the things you do for love just don’t fit me.
No, they don’t fit me.

Chorus:
No, It’s not love that we’re making
No, it’s not love here tonight
It’s not love but I’m not complaining
It’s not forever but that’s all right

"LOVE BLIND"

All alone we sat on the rocks
The night was alive with the waves and the wind
A blonde halo danced around your face
As your blue eyes pulled me in

Chorus:
I never intended to fall so fast
It was the last thing on my mind
I knew from that first kiss
I was love blind
Love blind

Hiding away from the seawall lights
We laid down in a bed of sand
The goddess of love in the pale moonlight
I could taste the salt on your skin

Chorus:
I never intended to fall so fast
It was the last thing on my mind
I knew from that first kiss
I was love blind
Love blind

Break:
From the first time I saw
I couldn't get you out of my mind
I wanna spend the rest of my life
Love blind - Love blind

I wanna live in a beach house
And you beside me every night
I've waited for what I see in you eyes
For damn near all my life.

Chorus:
I never intended to fall so fast
It was the last thing on my mind
I knew from that first kiss
I was love blind
Love blind

"LAST OLD MAN OF THE SEA"

He's a writer of fiction based on fact
Lord, he's been to hell and half the way back
' Puts down all he's heard in the safety of words
Before the years wash the memories away
Before the years wash the memories away

The ladies he's loved are "forget - me - nots"
When he says "I love you" it means a lot
He lives each day like it was his last
And he's run out of dues to pay
He's run out of dues to pay

Chorus:
A survivor of lost loves - A speaker of truth
Unless the liquor got his tongue too loose
The last of a vanishing breed - The last old man of the sea

He says this island keeps him alive
The tropical sun burns in his eyes
We hoist a few every now and then
And he tells stories of his life on the sea
He tells stories of his life on the sea

Chorus:
A survivor of lost loves - A speaker of truth
Unless the liquor got his tongue too loose
The last of a vanishing breed - The last old man of the sea

Bridge:
When he takes a friend it has no end
And he'll always give you a smile
He never looks back on the dead days
Lined up single file

Chorus:
A survivor of lost loves - A speaker of truth
Unless the liquor gets his tongue too loose
The last of a vanishing breed - The last old man of the sea
The last old man of the sea

"DON'T CALL ME NO REFUGEE"

The bar was full for a Tuesday night
But I didn’t know half the faces
All eyes were glued to the TV
New Orleans was devastated
Our night sky was clear
This time Galveston was spared
They said the refugees lost everything
And there were dead everywhere

There was a tall man in the corner
Drinking Jack and smoking Picayune
He kept looking at the TV
Tellin’ about all Katrina ruined
A huge fist hit the table
And rage ran across his face
Hell, they got it wrong he said

Chorus:
Don’t call me no refugee
I fought in Desert Storm
And I ‘m an American I guarantee
New Orleans is still my home
And it will always be
So don’t call me no refugee

He got up to leave
But before he reached the door
A few people started clapping
And it turned into a roar
We weren’t all from Louisiana
Just brothers and sisters of the heart
And I’ll never forget what he said

Chorus:
Don’t call me no refugee
I fought in Desert Storm
And I ‘m an American I guarantee
New Orleans is still my home
And it will always be
So don’t call me no refugee
Don’t call me no refugee

"SAND DOLLARS"

December magic - Thinkin' it's tragic
It's Christmas and I'm here alone
I've got too many dreams and so little wealth
So I spend my time at home

Chorus:
Sand dollars that's all I have to spend
With doves that never fly
Sand dollars that crumble in my hand
And love is all they can buy
Love is all they can buy

As the winter sun climbs in the sky
My shadow re-appears
I sit on the dock and stare out at the ‘Gulf
And say "I love you" as if you could hear

Chorus:
Sand dollars that's all I have to spend
With doves that never fly
Sand dollars that crumble in my hand
And love is all they can buy
Love is all they can buy

Bridge:
I should take a walk on the beach
With the sun just of my reach
But I’ll just sit right here
And drink the rest of my Dutch beer

Chorus:
Sand dollars that's all I have to spend
With doves that never fly
Sand dollars that crumble in my hand
And love is all they can buy
Love is all they can buy

"RUBY'S DREAM"

Ruby works at the “IHOP” six nights a week
Monday night she stays at home and off her aching feet
She’s got a steady boyfriend who works off-shore.
He wants to move in with her but she wants more.

Chorus:
And it almost feels like love
Close but not close enough
She wants to be treated special
Not like a summer fling
He’s nothing like the man in Ruby’s dream

Ruby dropped out of college – She didn’t like the campus scene
‘Left Lubbock in a hurry before she turned nineteen.
She drove to Galveston and left West Texas behind
She met Jerry on the first night – ‘Thought his heart was kind

Chorus:
And it almost feels like love
Close but not close enough
She wants to be treated special
Not like a summer fling
He’s nothing like the man in Ruby’s dream

Bridge:
She thinks about breakin’ it off
But hates the thought of being alone
Like it was when it was her and her momma
After her Daddy left home

Break:
It’s Monday morning - She’s headed to the beach with her “Red Raiders” cap on.
Jerry’s out in the Gulf so her time is all her own

Chorus:
And it almost feels like love
Close but not close enough
She wants to be treated special - Not like a summer fling
He’s nothing like the man in Ruby’s dream

Ending:
She’s waiting - Lord, she’s still waiting

"ME AND GERRI"

Me and Gerri used to take the bus downtown
We’d get off at the turnaround
It was our ritual every Monday night
We’d walk around the Strand in the neon lights

I’d bring my guitar down to Sangerfest Park
Together we’d make our journey of the heart
I loved her and she liked me
Our romantic trip in 2003.

Chorus:
On Monday nights I still come down here
Gerri’s long gone to I don’t know where
I sit on the bench in the dark
Howling at the moon – Playing my guitar

The island seems half dead tonight
But after living all week in overdrive
It’s a change of pace – I recharge my soul
Time to hit the seawall – I’m on a roll

Chorus:
On Monday nights I still come down here
Gerri’s long gone to I don’t know where
I sit on the bench in the dark
Howling at the moon – Playing my guitar

"SEAWALL BOULEVARD"

There’s an island on the coast of Texas
I came here to get away from my ex’s
Time slows down – Life’s not as hard
You can find it all on Seawall Boulevard

Why be grim - Let your past be your teacher
Don’t look back too long - You’re bound to see the Reaper
Where I live Paradise is my front yard
On Seawall Boulevard

I had a woman - She was a lovely creature
I fell in love with each and every feature
When she left I really took it hard
Tonight I’ll be rockin’ on Seawall Boulevard

Lead Break:

Bartender please put a “Heinie” in my hand
Tonight I’m drinking on the installment plan
Call me a cab as you’re leavin’ – Here’s the keys to my car
Tonight I’m partyin’ on Seawall Boulevard

There’s an island on the coast of Texas
I came here to get away from my ex’s
Time slows down – Life’s not as hard
You can find it all on Seawall Boulevard

"TROPICAL HEAVEN"

Ladies all dressed up in a rainbow of colors
Walk down the boulevard – So pleasin’ to the eye
It’s well past time to leave but then again why worry
You’re never late when you’re livin’ on island time

All the bars downtown fill the air with music
The flavors come together–Reggae, Zydeco, and Rock.
There’s a band that does country dressed in shorts and sandals
Playin’ some Buffett just around the block

Chorus:
There’s something here you can’t put in a bottle
Beyond the smilin’ faces and the sun that makes you tan
The weatherman may sin but all is forgiven
You’ll find paradise is here – In tropical heaven

This is where Jean Lafitte buried his treasure
It’s out on Pelican Island covered in cement
Galveston sits at the foot of Houston
When you cross that causeway your worries you’ll forget

Chorus:
There’s something here you can’t put in a bottle
Beyond the smilin’ faces and the sun that makes you tan
On the Gulf Coast of Texas there’s an island made for livin’
Here you’ll find the door – To tropical heaven

The Gulf of Mexico – Such a tempting mistress
Now and then she devours the palms and the sand
It’s a risk you take livin’ close to heaven
The seawall holds back the tide till the devil comes again

Chorus:
There’s something here you can’t put in a bottle
Beyond the smilin’ faces and the sun that makes you tan
Chili and gumbo – A little spicy island livin’
You’re welcome here my friend – In tropical heaven

Ending:
Tropical heaven ( Come back again )
Tropical heaven ( Mermaids in the sand )
Tropical heaven ( Angels in the wind ) Tropical heaven.

"GULF COAST HIGHWAY"

Well, I left El Paso like a slow movin' train
Headed east on I10 - Anywhere I'll see rain
Got my mind made up - Gonna make a new start
I'll take that Gulf Coast Highway
And drive you out of my heart

I knew when I met you it was too strong to fight
I looked in your eyes - it was love at first sight
I'm puttin' distance between us before my world falls apart
I'll take that Gulf Coast Highway
And drive you out of my heart

Chorus:
I was a little too trusting - Believed all you said
When I woke up without you - ‘wished I was dead
You taught me a lesson – Next time I'll be smart
I'll take that Gulf Coast Highway
And drive you out of my heart

Lead Break:

Woke up this morning - Still needin' sleep
Forty miles from Houston ( and I ) All ready feel the heat
My old Camaro wont fail me - We won't stop until dark
I'll take that Gulf Coast Highway
And drive you out of my heart

Chorus:
I was a little too trusting - 'Believed all you said
When I woke up without you - ( I ) wished I was dead
You taught me a lesson - Next time I'll be smart

"I HATE TO SLEEP ALONE"

She was Playboy pretty – Just starin’ at the wall
Smokin’ her cigarettes – Suckin’ down some menthol
I asked her politely if she wanted company
She held up her empty glass and said “Nothing here’s free”

Ouside the night was dying as I ordered one more round
She gave me a wicked laugh as she quickly gulped hers’ down
She said “Come home with me baby and we’ll live out a fantasy.
We can drink a little Cuervo – Just you and me

Chorus:
I hate to sleep alone
Why don’t you spend the night
You can do anything you want to me
Just hold me tight
Please, you don’t have to go
You know I hate to sleep alone”

When we got to her place she pulled all the window shades down
She told me her momma and daddy were both out of town
She was in Galveston for the weekend and the it was off to Paree
This was their summer home since back in ‘93

She walked behind the bar and lined things up for her appetite
Then we ended up in a bedroom with no windows – All done up in white
She made me nervous but I knew I couldn’t leave
In a west end beach house with a woman with no modesty

Chorus:
I hate to sleep alone
Why don’t you spend the night
You can do anything you want to me
Just hold me tight
Please, you don’t have to go
You know I hate to sleep alone

Instrumental Break:

Chorus:

"GALVESTON"

I grew up on the Texas coast
Believin’ in my momma and the Holy Ghost
‘Learned about girls in an Oldsmobile
A back seat lover who didn’t kiss and tell
‘Seemed like life was all down hill to me

‘Heard some Taylor-made songs on the radio
“Fire and Rain” and “Country Road”
Lightfoot and James and their poems of life
With a keen eye they see the light
Old Hank would smile – They sing so righteously

Chorus:
I’ve searched the whole world over
And it occurs to me
That I finally found where I should be
I’ll sing in the bars
And live my life in the sun
In Galveston

The Gulf Coast of Texas is a fine gumbo
A little Tex-Mex and King Creole
I’m at the edge of heaven there can be no doubt
‘Sit at the end of the jetty thinkin’ things out
‘Feel the waves crash. Let my worries wash out to sea

Chorus:
I’ve searched the whole world over
And it occurs to me
That I finally found where I should be
I’ll sing in the bars
And live my life in the sun
In Galveston

I grew up on the Texas Coast
‘Believin’ in momma and the Holy Ghost
There’s a lot of good people who call me friend
When I get too wild, they reel me in
If I could change my life I’d live beginning to end
In Galveston
In Galveston
Galveston – Oh, Galveston

“THE STORM”

The sun did rise
In the Texas sky
It was another day
In paradise
Off to the southeast
The clouds began to turn black
The tide crawled up the beach
With each hour that passed

The warning came on the seventh
As the storm neared the coast
The water began to boil
As it began it's approach
It was a different back then
Back when storms had no name
When God takes control
There's no one to blame

Sister Elisabeth Ryan
Went to town in a driving rain
The Gulf had swallowed the road
But still she came
“Mother” tried to get her to stay
But she had to leave
She hurried back to St. Mary's
She had children to feed

The orphans were scared
The Sisters of Mercy prayed
They had the children sing
"Queen of the Waves"
By 6 pm
The Gulf and the Bay had become one
They tied themselves to the children
When all hope was gone

Bridge:
September eighth
The devil wind came to town
1900
They say Galveston drowned

At 7:30
The tidal surge struck the shore
At St. Mary's Infirmary
Death roared through the first floor
A wall of water
Fifteen or twenty feet high
Pushed by the winds
Of hell in the devils eye

The Sante Fe train
Was thrown like a toy from it's tracks
The wind and the waves combined
In a brutal attack
Galveston
Became a lake of debris
Thousands were lost
To eternity

Nothing could be done
When they sounded the alarm
Too many died
Trying to ride out the storm
They stacked the bodies
To be buried at sea
Edison took pictures
Of the tragedy

Bridge:
September 8th
The devil wind came to town
1900
They said Galveston drowned

Ending:
The sun still rises
In the Texas sky
Over the island town
That refused to die
Now there’s a seawall
To protect us from harm
But we should never forget

"ALICE FROM DALLAS"

There’s a lady I’m seeing who works down on the Strand
She’s all bosom and curves and provocatively tan
At night we take our blanket and lay down in the sand
And drink wine under the stars

She came to the island in search of her smile
After one more marriage than suited her smile
By the grace of divorce and her ex-husband Kyle
She ended up tendin’ bar

Chorus:
Oh Alice from Dallas you’re purely divine
More than eye candy – I love to watch as you shine
Dancin’ ‘round tables like a woman possessed
Servin’ a drink with a glimpse of your chest

Alice ain’t callous and her anatomy’s fine
Got a heart made of gold and she don’t mind cheap wine
She could do a lot better but she says her heart’s mine
And she don’t make fun of my car

Chorus:
Oh Alice from Dallas you’re purely divine
More than eye candy – I love to watch as you shine
Dancin’ ‘round tables like a woman possessed
Servin’ a drink with a glimpse of your chest

Chorus:
Oh Alice from Dallas you’re purely divine

"THE QUEEN OF THE BALINESE"

She moved down with the clothes on her back
Made her nest egg in and out of the sack
She’d been born to life of poverty
She was hot –No tease
The queen of the Balinese

The prettiest in the district – She could pick and choose
Had’em waiting in line to see the view
Of her silk stockin’s and her eyes of baby blue
She did as she pleased
The queen of the Balinese

Chorus:
Every Friday night
She mixed with society
All the women talked about her
And the men smiled knowingly.
A sight to behold
She danced so provocatively
She brought them to their knees
The queen of the Balinese

She got herself married to a well to do
Too much of a good thing broke the man in two
He died in her arms and made her a widow of endless means
Beyond her wildest dreams
The queen of the Balinese

Chorus:
Every Friday night
She mixed with society
All the women talked about her
And the men smiled knowingly.
A sight to behold
She danced so provocatively
She brought them to their knees

"I LIVE IN A BLUE HOUSE"

I sing for my supper and love every moment
As long as I'm anywhere out of Beaumont
I've adopted this island - When I'm here I'm home
I moved down here to be close to my daughter
She's an angel on earth - I'm lucky I've got her
If it wasn't for her I'd probably be dead

Chorus:
I live in a blue house eight blocks from the ocean
I love it here. I live in slow motion.
No reason to worry - No reason to worry at all
I live in a blue house on Galveston Island
Everywhere I turn the people are smiling
I'm in no hurry - I'm in no hurry at all

Been married more times than I care to remember
In the beginning it's always "Love-ah-me-tender"
Somebody slap me if I ever get that notion again
I've got lots of friends - Too many to mention
There's pretty ladies in every direction
I'm still looking for the one whose looking for me

Chorus:
I live in a blue house eight blocks from the ocean
I love it here. I live in slow motion.
No reason to worry - No reason to worry at all
I live in a blue house on Galveston Island
Everywhere I turn the people are smiling
I'm in no hurry - I'm in no hurry at all

Tonight I'm playing at the Captain’s Table
Lord this isn't work - I'm lucky I'm able
There was a time I thought I'd never do this again
My memory's gone - That's a blessing and a curse
But I wish I could remember the 2nd verse
It's getting better the longer that I'm down here.

Chorus:
I live in a blue house eight blocks from the ocean
I love it here. I live in slow motion.
No reason to worry - No reason to worry at all
I live in a blue house on Galveston Island
Everywhere I turn the people are smiling
I'm in no hurry - I'm in no hurry at all

"WAVE DANCE"

I watch the waves chew up the beach
Now my cabin's within their reach
Another year or so - one more tropical blow
And they'll swallow my home.

Chorus:
The beach is a church for my soul
A playground for hearts that never grow old
For me, it's a lifelong romance
I go down to the water
And I watch the waves dance

Some people just don't understand
The kinship we have with the water and the wind
Long after we're gone the waves will roll on
And on and on.

Chorus:
The beach is a church for my soul
A playground for hearts that never grow old
For me, it's a lifelong romance
I go down to the water
And watch the waves dance

Bridge:
An army of white caps
Waiting in line
To throw themselves
On the beach to die.

Chorus:
The beach is church for my soul
A playground for hearts that never grow old
For me, it's a lifelong romance
I go down to the water
And watch the waves dance

I watch the waves dance
Watch the waves dance
I watch the waves dance

"FREE BORN ISLAND MAN – PART 2"

The Heroes’ Monument rests
In the center of Broadway
I used to live a block away
In a blue house with a view of the street
Where the crack heads came out to play
I moved down here in search of my soul
And I found so much more
Surfin’ for money with an old guitar
On the waves of the Mardi Gras shore.

Chorus:
They say no man is an island and I know that for a fact
I came here a broken man and I’ve made it half way back
I’ve got all weather friends and the palm trees and the sand
It’s hard work stayin’ tan - I’m a free born island man.

“The Free State of Galveston” was a damn good bet
Till the Texas Rangers hatched a plan.
Attorney General Wilson sent the gamblers packin.
They went to Vegas to deal their hand.
In 1957 the politicians saved our souls
When they smashed the slot machines
They showed us who was in control
Of our hopes and our oleander dreams.

Chorus:
They say no man is an island and I know that for a fact
I came here a broken man and I’ve made it half way back
I’ve got all weather friends and the palm trees and the sand
It’s hard work stayin’ tan - I’m a free born island man.

Chorus:
They say no man is an island and I know that for a fact
I came here a broken man and I’ve made it half way back
I’ve got all weather friends and the palm trees and the sand
It’s hard work stayin’ tan - I’m a free born island man.

“GALVESTON'S MORE THAN A GLENN CAMPBELL SONG”

I can walk on the beach and feel the pulse of God
Then go face the world one more time
With a little help from above – When push comes to shove
It don’t drive me out of my mine.

There’s a gumbo of music in the air
The rhythm of the waves dial me in.
My friends have my back when the devil sits at my table
And tries to drown me in gin.

Chorus:
(Now) I wake up at the door to Heaven
The island gives peace to my soul
I know where I belong
Galveston’s more than a Glenn Campbell song

At night when I lay down for sleepin’
And the thoughts of the day crowd my head
The sound of the beach is my lullaby
And I float away in my bed.

Chorus:
(Now) I wake up at the door to Heaven
The island gives peace to my soul
I know where I belong
Galveston’s more than a Glenn Campbell song

Bridge:
Sarah came down for the weekend
Leavin’ Dallas far behind
She had to leave and go back
I didn’t know how to act but I’m sure I’ll be just fine

Chorus:

(Now) I wake up at the door to Heaven
The island gives peace to my soul

"LIFE'S A BEACH"

We used to drive up on Cherry Hill
And park till the cops would come
We’d crack the windows so we could hear the waves
And I’d do my best to get me some
That was back when we thought we’d live forever.
We were ten foot tall and bullet proof
You’d go home drunk and you’d catch hell.
Your Daddy’d say “Not under my roof”.

Chorus #1
We here for the birth of rock-n-roll
And when man walked on the moon
We’ve watched’em put a spin on anything
To make the truth into a cartoon.
For now I’ll just enjoy myself
No time wasted wonderin’ why
Life’s a beach and then you die

There’s a road of moonlight on the water
The waves dance as the mermaids sing.
I feel the breeze upon my face
As I listen for angel wings
I’ve grown older without trying.
The days come and they disappear.
I’m a child of the baby boom
Thankful for every year.

Chorus #2
Now they’re cloning everything.
Humans behind closed doors.
Playing God with DNA.
There’s nothing left that’s really yours.
We’re losing the human race
While time drifts slowly by
Life’s a beach and then you die

Bridge:
There’s nothing over the rainbow
And once you realize it’s true
You’ll find home is where the heart is
And it’s all up to you.

Chorus #3
After all these years of livin’ I’m a little closer to the truth
I know there’s so much more to learn. Lord, I regret the sins of my youth.
You don’t a second chance so you’d better live it right.
'Cause life’s a beach and then you die.
Life’s a beach and then you die.

"BALLAD OF STEWART ROAD"

I was roarin' down Stewart Road
Peddle to the medal about to explode
95 miles an hour with a beer in my lap
Going anywhere but home I guess
With a load of shit to get off my chest
Looking for a place
That I ain't found yet.
I wonder why no one gets out alive
From a world full of shuck and jive.

Chorus:
Don't believe the bullshit you hear on TV
It's all propaganda from the CIA
Big business owns the government
Ain't no doubt where the money went
Conservative or liberal it don't matter.
The poor get the shaft and the fat get fatter.

I've got a buddy from Jamaica Beach.
‘Rides a Harley from Hell and seven days a week
His girlfriend looks like a Penthouse Pet
I borrowed his Harley one Saturday night
Gave a blonde a ride in the island moonlight
She was a pleasure to see
And joy to hold
Riding down the road out of control
I've got love tattooed on my soul

Chorus:
Don't believe the bullshit you hear on TV
It's all propaganda from the CIA
Big business owns the government
Ain't no doubt where the money went
Conservative or liberal it don't matter
The poor get the shaft and the fat get fatter.

Bridge:
Health care for us all would be God sent
But we beat around the Bush as the main event
Prayin' we don't have to live out of our car
Waitin' for another FDR

Life is a game with too many rules.
When you're born rich you can buy the tools
To build your house on the right side of the tracks
The poor keep waiting for lady luck
As they work to keep rolling in their pickup truck
It don’t seem fair for blood to decide your fate
Wars are fought for power and food
Peace is a noble attitude.

Chorus:
Don't believe the bullshit you hear on TV
It's all propaganda from the CIA
Big business owns the government
Ain't no doubt where the money went
Conservative or liberal it don't matter
The poor get the shaft and the fat get fatter.

"YELLOW ROSE"

She's out on the town and lookin' for a lover
When she puts it on him he'll never recover
How long has it been - Since a man held her close

Ready for any thing - She'll pick and choose
She'll be cutting a rug - ' Wore her dancing shoes
Came with her sister Shirley - On the way they had a little wine

Saw a cute guy standing at the bar
They talked for awhile and went and sat in his car
He looked a lot like Brad Pitt - They had to smoke some of his weed

Chorus:
She's all dressed up and ready to go - She's a hot fire-cracker just about to explode
She's gonna get with it and man it shows and man it shows
She's the prettiest girl in Texas - They call her the "Yellow Rose"

With her long blonde hair she looked so pretty
Said she just moved down from Texas City
She was built like a Coke bottle turned upside down

She could jitter-bug better than most folks walk
When she walks by - All the men talk
About what they'd like to do if they could get her alone

She plays the field - Got nobody special
Mister right now can't be artificial
He better treat like she' s the best thing in panty hose

Chorus:
She's all dressed up and ready to go - She's a hot fire-cracker just about to explode
She's gonna get with it and man it shows and man it shows
She's the prettiest girl in Texas - They call her the "Yellow Rose""

Her family moved here from the panhandle
Something about a family scandal
Her brother like his coke up his nose

She had a rich boy friend with an XKE
He didn't work out to be her cup of tea
Boys have their toys but she wants a man

Chorus:
She's all dressed up and ready to go - She's a hot fire-cracker just about to explode
She's gonna get with it and man it shows and man it shows
She's the prettiest girl in Texas - They call her the "Yellow Rose"

It's getting late - She has find Shirley
Come to find out she left early
With an old boy friend back home from school

Driving back alone don't make her feel good
She had too much to drink - More than she should
But she'd rather drive home alone than end up with a clown

Chorus:
She's all dressed up and ready to go - She's a hot fire-cracker just about to explode
She's gonna get with it and man it shows and man it shows

"CUPID'S BALLAD"

Hand in hand we walk down Market Street
Sayin’ “I love you” with our eyes
Alone in the midday crowd beneath a summer sun
Watching the tourists pass us by

Galveston’s all dressed up for the tour ships
The restaurants lined up to get their fill.
We’re both hungry but we sit down in the park
Close together so we can feel the thrill

Chorus:
We’re spending time like it was money
Touchin’ hearts with every breath
If this ain’t love we’re feelin’
Then I ain’t felt it yet

Honey, you touched my soul the first time
It was like I'd known you all my life
We sat on the seawall and talked for hours
In a lifeguard stand we sat and watched the night

Chorus:
Spending time like it was money
Touchin’ hearts with every breath
If this ain’t love we’re feelin’
Then I ain’t felt it yet

Bridge:
Tonight the Strand is packed with people
Searchin' for trinkets and a t-shirt to wear home

Chorus:
We’re spending time like it was money
Touchin’ hearts with every breath
If this ain’t love we’re feelin’
Then I ain’t felt it yet

"BROWN EYED GIRL"
By: Van Morrison
Parody Lyric Playfully Written By: JD Richards

Hey where did we go,
Days when the storm came
Runnin’ from Rita,
Playin' a new game,
Parked on the freeway hey, hey
Sweatin’ and a cussin’
The East Texas parking lot
We were barely movin’ - Me and you
My brown eyed girl,
You my brown eyed girl.

Whatever happened
The cars movin’ so slow
Goin’ out of our minds
Listening to talk radio
Standing in the sunlight peein’,
Hiding behind a construction wall,
Slipping and sliding
Trapped with no contra-flow, Me and you
My brown eyed girl,
You my brown eyed girl.

I still remember when we ran out of gas,
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
La te da

So hard to stay awake,
Too tired to get it on.
It seems like just the other day,
My how time has flown,
Cast my memory back there, Lord
I get so mad thinking 'bout
Pullin’ off in the green grass
Beside the inter-state with you
My brown eyed girl
You my brown eyed girl

I still remember when we ran out of gas,
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
La te da

"WASN'T THAT A MIGHTY STORM"

Chorus
Wasn't that a mighty storm
Wasn't that a mighty storm in the morning, well
Wasn't that a mighty storm That blew all the people all away

You know the year of 1900
Children, many years ago
Death came howling on the ocean
Death calls, you got to go
Now Galveston had a seawall
To keep the water down, and a
High tide from the ocean
Spread the water over the town

(Chorus)

You know the trumpets give them warning
You'd better leave this place
Now, no one thought of leaving
'til death stared them in the face
And the trains they all were loaded
The people were all leaving town
The trestle gave way to the water
And the trains they went on down

(Chorus)

Rain it was a' falling
Thunder began to roll
Lightning flashed like hell fire
The wind began to blow
Death the cruel master
When the wind began to blow
Rode in on a team of horses
T cried, "Death, won't you let me go".

(Chorus)

Hey, now trees fell on the island
And the houses give away
Some they strained and drowned
Some died in most every way
And the sea began to rolling
And the ships they could not stand
And I heard a captain crying
"God save a drowning man".

(Chorus)

Death your hands are clammy
You got them on my knee
You come and took my mother
Won't you come back after me
And the flood it took my neighbor
Took my brother too
I thought I heard my father calling
And I watched my mother go

(Chorus)

You know the year of 1900
Children, many years ago
Death came howling on the ocean
Death calls, you got to go

(Chorus 2X)

Fifteen years Le Bing Son
Fought side by side with the Americans
In the mountains and deltas of Vietnam
In '75 Saigon fell and he left his command
And brought his family to the promised land

Seabrook Texas and the small towns in the Gulf of Mexico
It was delta country and reminded him of home
He worked as a machinist, put his money away
And bought a shrimp boat with his cousin
And together they harvested Galveston Bay

In the mornin' 'fore the sun come up
He'd kiss his sleepin' daughter
Steer out through the channel
And casts his nets into the water

Billy Sutter fought with Charlie Company
In the highlands of Quang Tri
He was wounded in the battle of Chu Lai
And shipped home in '68

There he married and worked the gulf fishing grounds
In a boat that'd been his father's
In the morning he'd kiss his sleeping son
And cast his nets into the water

Billy sat in front of his TV as the south fell
And the Communists rolled into Saigon
He and his friends watched as the refugees came
Settle on the same streets and worked the coast they grew up on
Soon in the bars around the harbor was talk
Of America for Americans
Someone said, "You want 'em out, you got to burn 'em out"
And brought in the Texas klan

One humid Texas night there were three shadows in the harbor
Come to burn the Vietnamese boats into the sea
In the fire's light shots rang out
Two Texans lay dead on the ground
Le stood with a pistol in his hand

A jury acquitted him in self defense
As before the judge he did stand
But as he walked down the courthouse steps
Billy said "My friend, you're a dead man"

One late summer night Le stood watch along the waterside
Billy stood in the shadows
His K-bar knife in his hand
And the moon slipped behind the clouds
Le lit a cigarette, the bay was as still as glass
As he walked by Billy stuck his knife into his pocket
Took a breath and let him pass

In the early darkness Billy rose up
Went into the kitchen for a drink of water
Kissed his sleeping wife
Headed into the channel
And casts his nets into the water
Of Galveston Bay

"BIG BLUE WATER"

Big Blue Water... As Far as I Can See
Big Blue Water... Between My Baby and Me
Big Blue Water... Just Might Get the Best of Me

Big Bad Ocean... Or is it the Gulf of Mexico?
Oh, this Ain't no Ocean... It's the Gulf of Mexico
Big Bad Gulf... Stretch Out Farther Than My Boat Will Go

(lead guitar)

*Break*

Don't Know Why I'm Here
I Don't Even Like to Swim
To Get to my Baby
I'd Swim Right Back to Her
Big Blue Water... Just as Far As I Can See
Big Blue Water... Between My Baby and Me

Ugly Brown Water... I Must Be Close To Galveston Now
Ugly Brown Water... I Must Be Close To Galveston Now
When I Get To My Baby, I Know My Baby, She Won't Let Me Down

"GALVESTON"

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'
I still see her dark eyes glowin'
She was 21 when I left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston

I still see her standing by the water
Standing there lookin' out to sea
And is she waiting there for me?
On the beach where we used to run

Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying
Before I dry the tears she's crying
Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun
At Galveston, at Galveston
