Winter Wonderland
Christmas 2004
After
two days with chill
factors hitting a "balmy" 25-27 degrees, precipitation began
to fall on The
Island, on Christmas
Eve, in the form of snow!
It
had not snowed in Galveston
since 1989,
so many young children had never seen the stuff. When the kids saw the
snow falling, they rushed
outside to make snowballs and snow men! Later that evening, the snow
really started to blanket the area. People all over the City left the
warmth of their homes to go outside and play in
the strange white powder
falling from the heavens!
Christmas
morning, there were 9
inches of snow on the ground,
so many residents decided to go out and explore The Island
to see what
it looked
like draped in white, and
many took pictures of this rare event.
Although it has snowed a few times in Galveston,
since its
incorporation in 1839,
according to local news services this is the first
time in history
that it has snowed on Christmas
Eve or
Christmas Day!!
It was one of the heaviest local snowfalls in history, too! It even
snowed in
the lower Rio
Grande Valley, which has not
seen snow since 1895!
